Why Madrid and Barcelona?
As the third largest city in the European Union, Madrid is major financial and cultural hub for Southern Europe. Spain has recently started investing heavily in entrepreneurship, and is known for hosting some of the world’s most recognised Academic Institutions, including IE Business School, popular for its diversity, entrepreneurship, technology and innovation on their MBA programmes.


During your visit, you will learn about innovative impact investing both in the Spanish and European context, and how this has supported a growing entrepreneurial eco-system, founded in unique opportunities stemming from the deep financial crisis of 2009. This, is of course in the context of a vibrant, international city, famous for its bars, restaurants, people and culture.


Barcelona on the other hand, is one of the leading tourist, economic, trading and cultural landscapes in Southern Europe. Recognised for its distinctive landscape, Barcelona hosts leading Universities such as IESE and ESADE and is considered a leading smart city endowed with green infrastructure, where we can examine how technology is shaping the way Spain and Europe innovate.

  1. The values that are driving business innovation in Spain.
  2. Innovation in different fields, including education, impact investing, reputation management and value in the 21st century.
  3. Field visits and interactions with social entrepreneurs and responsible leadership in Spain.
  4. Exposure to different models for innovation, alternatives career paths, and methods for doing good and doing well in their own careers and lives.
  5. Social innovation and Design Thinking.
  6. A full day workshop designed by the Emzingo team to teach students how to incorporate design thinking, human centred design, and Theory U to find creative and innovative solutions.


Wits Business School’s Learning Objectives include:

  1. For the student to be enriched by a lived experience of travel, invoking deep learning in the area of social entrepreneurship that is transferable to South Africa and will assist in creating real growth and employment.
  2. For the student to understand the principles of the circular economy and the international movement away from the extractive linear economy that underpin the values that are driving business innovation in Spain.
  3. For the student to apply the learning principles revealed in the Spanish study tour to offering solutions to the requirement for the establishment of financially sustainable business incubators and entrepreneurial hubs in South Africa.
  4. For the student to elevate, enrich and contextual his/her South African studies with the Spanish management educational experience.


This study tour will provide students with exposure to different economies and cultures in various destinations. It is designed to expose the student to different organisations in Mauritius and South Africa including business schools, government agencies, state owned enterprises and private corporations.


At the end this course, students will be able to:

  • Develop contemporary knowledge about business practices, in Spain which will assist them to appraise the basics and standard protocol of interactions with the business environment in these countries.
  • Critically assess the Spanish economy and determine their strengths and weaknesses for doing business.
  • Compare and contrast the business environment and different cultures of Spain in relation to South Africa and Africa as a whole.
  • Evaluate and analyse business models of selected company examples in Spain and South Africa.
  • Contextualise this knowledge in the Group take-home assessment.


Linkage with Core Elements of your Masters Curriculum

Curriculum tied to the context in South Africa:

The study tour draws on various South African companies experience in various markets. Here the unique experience of Emzingo in Spain in the field of social entrepreneurship will assist us to make comparisons and transfer knowledge from one context to another. It is for this logic that you will be examined on a South African cases study that requires a Spanish insight.


Curriculum tied to context in African and other dynamic emerging market economies:

The overarching objective is to identify the opportunities for social entrepreneurship in South Africa that will provide the basis for the real growth of the South African economy, which suffers from chronic levels of unemployment, inequality and poverty.


The European Union and therefore Spain are legally guided by the principles of the circular as opposed to the linear economy. The linear economy is purely extractive as is largely the case in South Africa whilst the linear economy is restorative and sustainable. This tour will afford the students the opportunity to consider whether it would be wise for South Africa’s economy policy to be legally guided by the circular economy. The study tour itinerary is superbly designed to enable the student to address South African economic challenges by a blended learning experience.


Entrepreneurial Action
The intent of this course is to invoke entrepreneurial action in the students to become rain-makers each in their own unique way.


Critical Engagement
The course itself is designed to invoke constructive and critical engagement in order to seek and reach ideal solutions.

This study tour underlies all other courses as it contributes to the overall Masters qualification by providing a capstone integrated learning experience, whereby students can bring to bear their knowledge of the whole Masters programme. This knowledge will allow them to analyse a foreign economy and businesses in that economy. In addition, this course directly supports the core themes of the Masters in terms of critical engagement, context of South Africa and also issues of sustainability.


Decisions and methodologies which students are exposed to during their classes and visits and private engagements and cultural in country interactions – from Strategy to HR, to Negotiation, to Operations to Marketing – are expressed as the underlying issues and learnings of this course.

Course assesment and assignments

Preparation for the Tour
It is recommended that you should very carefully Google every aspect of the itinerary before you embark on the study tour. You are advised to carefully read the case study and the recommended readings.


Teaching Contract
Please note that all visits and events on the global study tour are MANDATORY. Please refer to the standing orders regarding the tours. As a student you should review the Learning Contract and ensure that you are fully aware of the methods and implications of the assessment approach as mark allocations cannot be changed retrospectively.

You will all be ambassadors for South Africa and it is recommended that the students should appoint a protocol committee to address matters of behaviour and conduct.

Pass Mark Requirements
In terms of the Standing Orders, to pass a course a student is required to achieve a final accumulative average of 50% for a pass mark, and a sub-minimum of 35% in the examination. When an assignment is an exam equivalent, failure to submit on time will result in a student being ‘failed absent’, with the result that the student will be failed off the programme.

This case has been written specifically to enable you to reflect upon and internalize the learning that you have received in the field of social entrepreneurship in Spain, and to apply it to discovering practical solutions to the prevailing catastrophic unemployment crisis in South Africa. This case is in an early draft form. It needs to be tested in order to understand its relevance.


Break-up into syndicate groups

Use the insight and knowledge gained from your study trip to Spain about social entrepreneurship to suggest how sports stadiums in South Africa, which are all too often underutilized white elephants, may be converted into business incubators and entrepreneurial hubs, which can indenture large numbers of newly qualified vocational and academic graduates into gainful employment.


Please clearly identify the contribution that each member of your syndicate has contributed to the assignment.


It is suggested that your paper should not be more than 15 pages and should be typed in Arial at one and a half space. If you wish to exceed 15 pages you may.



Content – 50%
Informative and persuasive; judgement clearly stated; criteria and important, not trivial; Argument is based on impersonal criteria and not personal taste; reasons are convincing and supported; topic is thoroughly researched.


Organisation – 30%
Engaging introduction, one which hints, or overtly states to the reader the points of the essay; reasons for appraisal are clearly stated and supported; well-organised with logical sequencing of criteria and reasons, from most obvious to least obvious, or, least  convincing to most convincing, or, least important to most important.


Citation – 10%
Correct citation of research sources, minimum of seven, academically robust, references independently discovered either from the library or electronically.

Sentence variety, absence of errors of agreement, tense, number, word order, function, pronouns, prepositions, negatives, neat, precise word choice and usage, appropriate tone, absence of spelling, punctuation and capitalisation errors.

DOCTOR Geoff Heald

Geoff is a Senior Lecturer in Negotiation at Wits Business School. He is also the Visiting Professor of Negotiation at the Pontifical Catholic University in Santiago Chile.


His specialised interest is in teaching, researching and consulting in the area of negotiation. He is particularly interested in deals between developing and developed countries. He is currently developing an African Negotiation Project to be housed at the University of Witwatersrand. It will offer education, training, research, consulting and conferencing on negotiations in Africa. He is leading a project with Gauteng Cricket and Cricket South Africa that will seek to convert under-utilised sports stadiums into business incubators and entrepreneurial hubs and indenture young newly qualified men and women into the world of work.



In September 2016 Knowledge Resources Publishers, published “Why is Collective Bargaining Failing in South Africa? A reflection on how to restore social dialogue. He was employed at the Institute for Futures Research at Stellenbosch University where he gained expertise in the theory and practice of scenario analysis.



Geoff has a PhD in negotiation from Wits University. The title of his doctorate is; “Learning Amongst Enemies – A Phenomenological Study of the South African Constitutional Negotiations from 1985-1996.” Geoff’s LLM thesis was conducted as a comprehensive post-doctoral research degree on: “South Africa’s Voluntary Relinquishment of its Nuclear Arsenal and Accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in Terms of International Law.”



Geoff has been awarded the Wits Outstanding Lecturer Acknowledgement and has subsequently achieved constantly excellent assessments in all his negotiation teaching and at all levels of seniority, from entry-level to advanced negotiations.


One of his unique specialist capabilities is his ability to create indigenous organisation-specific negotiation programmes, for organisations that have deal-making challenges. He writes virtually all the cases that he uses in the learning setting.  These are in fact “deal-prototypes” and involve writing up the business case to solve real-time business challenges with the involvement of the negotiation team themselves. He uses experiential learning to accurately prototype the real-time deals with the active participation of the delegates.



Geoff’s uniquely integrated personal educational background, accumulated knowledge and skill in the domains of business case writing, facilitation, negotiation, and case teaching render him especially qualified to design and present negotiation programmes that help companies create profitable deals and save costs.

Legal Declaration of Indemnity, Undertaking and Consent
  1. This is subject to the proviso that the University’s maximum liability will be limited, whether for a single or multiple events, to the extent that is covered thereof;

When the University arranges for me to travel to locations which are outside of the University’s precincts, and when traveling in vehicles which do not belong to the University’s and/or are not driven by University staff, I will enjoy only such cover as referred to in Section 1 above, provided that I depart and travel from the University’s precincts and return to it from an excursion arrange by the University, on a route agreed upon in advance by the University;

This document is applicable to all modes of delivery of the Global Study Tour from 2017 onward. 

Assessment Policy
All assignments, including the attendance of the Amazing Race and all scheduled visits to businesses, other organisations and cultural activities, is compulsory.

Failure to comply with this policy will result in an automatic failure off this course. A record of attendance at each prescribed tour activity will be kept by the Tour Leader and will be submitted to the International Office as a formal record for student assessment. Should a student fail (including as a result of non-attendance and failure to participate), the tour will have to be repeated.

A candidate who has not completed all the requirements for this tour by the end of the minimum period of study and who is permitted in terms of Senate Standing Orders to continue will be required to register again for this tour at the beginning of the following academic year and pay the relevant fee.

Registration for the Global Study Tour
A candidate is required to register and pay in advance for the Study Tour in order to be admitted to complete the course.

If a candidate wishes to amend his/her selection of destination, a prescribed period of time will be permitted as indicated by the Global Study Tour Coordinator. However, no changes to selection of destination will be entertained once confirmed.

International Applicants
Applications from international exchange and immersion students are welcome. All international students need to conform with the University’s requirements and the South African legislation that pertains to such students.

Credits towards MBA or MM to other degrees
Students may be granted credits for this tour at international partner schools however please note that the granting of credits is based on the credit weighting exchange between the WBS MBA and other international programmes.

Pass mark for this course
In order to pass the study tour, a student must obtain a minimum of 50% as a final mark subject to the subminimum rule.

Students must register for the Global Business Study Tour (BUSA 7442A) in order to pay the travel component cost for the study tour. Students will be advised as to the Rand value that has to be paid for the study tour of their choice. The deadline for the choice of study tour and payments will be communicated to students by the School’s International Office. Failure to pay the full fee for the Global Study Tour in advance or failure to attend the tour for whatever reason will still hold the student liable for the full amount as indicated for the selected tour package. Please note that fees may not involve the same costing as certain travel destinations are cheaper than others. Also note that whenever indicated students will be responsible for their own transport and cost of meals and incidentals on each tour. Tour leaders do not carry additional funds to allow for students who do not make personal provision for their own expenses.

Allocation of Marks
The mark composition for each assignment will comprise a combination of marks awarded for assignment projects and field work, both individual and syndicate work. The mark allocation for the course is detailed in the course pack.

Syndicates may apply to have non-performing members excluded from the syndicate mark for their assignment, or have a portion of the total mark allocated to the non-performing student.

Publication of Final Course Results
The results of the global study tour will be published by the Faculty Office as soon as possible, normally within four weeks from assignment submission.

Disputes and Grievances
Any disputes or grievances that arise as a result of the application of, or failure to apply, the provisions of these Standing Orders should be managed within the Faculty’s existing appeals and grievance procedure. Problems should always be resolved as close to the source as possible. The grievance procedure policy and applicable forms are available from the Faculty Office.

Code of Conduct
All students will abide by the daily dress code as indicated by the Tour Leader depending on the daily schedule of events and places visited.

Students are also advised that whilst they are encouraged to enjoy the tour, they are reminded that they are participating in a Wits Study Tour programme and are not traveling for their own leisure purposes. As such, the prime focus is on teaching and learning and at all times students will need to participate in all prescribed activities and field visits.

Students are advised to heed the guidance and instruction of the designated Tour Leader on each trip. In addition, students are advised to serve as professional ambassadors of Wits University and the Wits Business School at all times whilst on tour. Students are also advised to download a copy of the Wits Student Code of Conduct to familiarise themselves with the policy.

During visits, students are to ensure that all mobile phones are switched off.
Students are to be punctual for all visits, failure to attend a visit without a valid reason will render your attendance as incomplete.

Failure to adhere to the above could result in a disciplinary action being lodged against the student.

Recording of Global Study Tour Activities
Business visit sessions may only be recorded (by audio, images or video) with the express written permission of that organisation. Students will be required to agree in writing that:

    • recordings will only be used for purposes of their own private study and revision;
    • recordings will not be copied, shared, communicated, published or distributed in any format whatsoever and using any medium whatsoever, unless requested to do so by the lecturer;
    • unedited copies recordings will be provided to the lecturer if requested to do so; and
    • Copyright of all recordings remain the property of the University.

It is noted that infringement of any of these conditions may result in disciplinary action being taken against the student.
